Diabetic Clinic
The concept of a Diabetes Clinic which is a multidisciplinary approach
has revolutionalized the management of diabetes. The clinic plays a role
in offering comprehensive and cost effective care to minimise mortality
and most important, the morbidity associated with diabetes.
Diabetes Mellitus continues to explode in our country and India today has
33 million diabetic subjects which is mainly contributed by the urban
population but this scenario is rapidly changing due to socio-economic
transition occuring in the rural areas also.
The diabetes clinic involves team work and the professionals included in this team are:
- Diabetes Educator
- Physician/Specialist Physician/Endocrinologist
- Dietitian
- Opthalmologist
- Foot Care Technician/Podiatrist
- Physiotherapist
The clinic is operational in all levels of health care and is minimally comprised of
a physician,a diabetes nurse educator and a dietitian. In our hospital we have the
extended services of a Physiotherapist which plays an effective role towards health
care. The clinic targets not only the individual diabetes patient(Type1 or Type2)
but also includes the following group of people :
- family members of patients with diabetes
- gestational diabetes mellitus
- high risk groups for diabetes(family history of diabetes, hypertension, history of gestational diabetes

The idea of having a diabetes clinic aims at improving patients' survival,
help them to cope with their ailment, reduce co-morbidities and to increase their
awareness and understanding towards diabetes and its complications. We are trying to
establish a comprehensive and complete health care under one roof. A diabetes clinic
visit therefore involves many assessments and takes some time to complete in order
to assess the patient properly therefore one should allow plenty of time for a diabetes
clinic visit.
