Neurosurgery has evolved since ancient Egypt and ancient Indian times and
until the 17th century it was limited to head injuries with high mortality
and morbidity rates. It was only in the 18th century that neurosurgery was
propelled by the likes of Cushing, Horsely, Mayfield and many others (post Listerian period).
Safe anaesthesia, modern neurological radio imaging and most important, the
development of superior techniques has significantly reduced mortality and
morbidity rates of present day Neurosurgical management.
Micro Neurosurgery has made surgical procedures safe, precise and meticulous.
It has developed in India only as late as the 1980s and its use is spreading
across the country with more neurosurgeons being trained and specialized equipment
being acquired by most hospitals.
Establishment of the Neurosurgery Unit at Nazareth Hospital, Shillong has immensely
benefited many trauma patients with head and spinal injuries where prompt management
is vital. This Unit has ensured that such patients need no longer travel long distances
to the nearest centre for neurosurgical care.
Micro Neurosurgery was first performed in Shillong here at Nazareth Hospital in December,
2006. The first patient was a 3-year old girl suffering from a Lateral Ventricle Choroid
Plexus Papilloma. A complete excision of the tumor was achieved using the operating
microscope and microsurgical technique resulting in the patient being cured. Since then,
in the past two years more than 190 microsurgical procedures have been performed from a
total of nearly 300 brain and spine surgeries. Micro Neurosurgery includes tumor surgeries
of the brain and spine, vascular malformations, aneurysm surgery and spine related ailments.
