Sixty bedded pediatrics ward with six semi ICU beds with central oxygen supply.
This sixty bedded ward admits patients from 1 mo to 12 yrs old. Older children
from 13 yrs to 18 yrs are admitted in medicine wards under the department of Pediatrics.
The department caters to non critical and critical cases belonging to all sub
specialties of pediatrics including cardiology, respiratory medicine, nephrology
and pediatric endocrinology.
There are nearly 20 beds in the newborn unit (Level II NICU) which caters to critical
newborn cases born in Nazareth hospital and outside Nazareth hospital especially coming
from far flung rural areas. Babies with birth weight as low as 900 gms and also babies
who have undergone neonatal surgeries, prematurity, respiratory distress syndrome and all
kinds of neonatal problems are admitted in the NICU. Procedures such as exchange
transfusion, surfactant therapy etc is carried out in the NICU. Radiant warmers (6 nos),
double surface phototherapy units, syringe pumps, monitors, oxygen concentrator,
CPAP are available in the NICU. Recently aquired equipments : Bubble CPAP, LED Phototherapy (2 nos), Multi channel cardiac monitor,
Neopuff, Infussion pump (6 nos).
The department functions as a referral unit/tertiary center for children and neonates
from all over Meghalaya. The department strives to give the best perinatal, neonatal
and pediatric care according to the recent and latest modalities of treatment available.
The doctors of this department are well qualified, trained and are regularly updated at
conferences and provide rational and best care to their patients.
The department of pediatrics and neonatology also has a successful DNB programme and is
recognized by the National Board of Examinations, New Delhi to select, admit and train
students for the degree of DNB in Pediatrics. Therefore there is a healthy academic
programme in place whereby there are regular seminars, journal reviews, mortality reviews,
case discussions and classes in the department daily.
